NGOC League

The NGOC League is our flagship series of 12 events, roughly evenly-spaced throughout the year: they take place across Gloucestershire.

They’re open to everyone, from beginners to expert orienteers. There’s no need to be a member of an orienteering club (although there’s a discount if you are). We encourage people to pre-enter – but we do allow entry on the day as long as we don’t run out of maps.

Format

• These are traditional “point-to-point” courses, with six courses of varying lengths and technical difficulties:
• Yellow: the easiest and shortest course, keeping to paths and obvious linear features. It’s suitable for junior beginners.
• Orange: an intermediate course involving taking shortcuts through the terrain. It’s generally the most suitable course for adult beginners and juniors who are stepping up from the Yellow course.
• Short Green/Green/Blue/Brown: all courses of high technical difficulty, with control points located anywhere in the terrain. These are suitable once you’re confident on the Orange course. The courses differ in their length: Short Green may be 3-4km as the crow flies, Brown 8-10km.
• Most events take place in forest or open Cotswold commons, but we mix it up a little in the summer with a couple of Urban events on the streets.
• For those with a competitive streak: results are combined across the year to find the League champion on each course, who wins a small prize. Usually each runner’s best 7 (out of 12) events count toward the standings.
