This is a mixed urban/rural course: two thirds of the checkpoints are spread around the streets of Churchdown village, with the remaining checkpoints located on footpaths up and around Churchdown Hill.

Parking is in Chapel Hay car park, in the centre of Churchdown.

The start and finish are at the north corner of the car park.

The 2024 MapRun season is rolling towards a close on 18 December, and we are starting to look at our programme for 2025. We aim to have another 20 or so runs during the year, a mix of winter night street races and summer evening semi rural ones, and we need people to plan them. They are pretty straightforward to plan, and we have a good list of possible venues, though you may have your own ideas as to where we could go. Well, what a fun time we had at Newnham last evening, thanks to MapRun's Odds and Evens scheme, clever planning by Abi Jones and Nicki Pettiford, and a lovely evening with a wonderful moonrise, in no way done justice on a micky mouse phone photo! By the way, spot the lone paddler waiting for the bore, due through in about half an hour! Almost everyone got the hang of the intricacies of odds and evens scoring on a course where every control you pass is registered, whether odd or even, and the system worked perfectly. Then on top of that delicious Welsh cakes and tiffin to replace the normal Lidl offerings! The general view was that it was a most enjoyable change from the normal scoring, but not to be repeated too often; it adds too much thinking🤨.Our next run, next Thursday, is in Hereford, and then in early October we are on the western edge of Gloucester, taking in Alney Island and the city centre, so look out for details soon here and on the website, for both of these races. Thanks and well done to everyone who made it to Berry Hill last night; the rain just about held off, but the going was very wet underfoot, and very dark for early September in the woods. Our next run, in Newnham on the 18th September, will be somewhat different in format. Details will appear shortly, but in essence, due to the lack of accessible paths up the hill West of the village, we will be running an Odds and Evens course on a 1:7,500 map, focussing on the village and the paths immediately around it. Of course, with satellite punching, you can't avoid punching odd controls when doing evens, and vice versa, but MapRun provides rules for helping to prevent inadvertent 'set' switching, and clever planning should also reduce the challenge somewhat. Our series of late Summer MapRuns is now published. We have a mix of venues, some largely urban, some semi-rural. These are ideal races for people looking for pleasant early evening running, or getting fit for more serious orienteering and other races towards the Autumn. As usual, the format is simple; you have 60 minutes to collect as many points as possible by visiting checkpoints of varying value. So picking a route that you can do in the time allowed whilst visiting as many high scoring controls as you can is key.That said, you don’t have to be competitive; if you just fancy a stroll or jog around some lovely local towns, villages and countryside you will be made most welcome. All you need is the MapRun App on your smartphone; the App will record your progress, give you a satisfying beep as you find each checkpoint, and will save your results to the MapRun system when you finish. You can pre-enter at Fabian4.co.uk, which is preferred, so that we know how many maps to print, or you can just turn up on the day, and hope that we have enough maps for you.
